1. My Linux machine wasn't starting Gnome upon bootup. The error I found in /var/log/XFree86.0.log was:
can't open default font 'fixed'
Tracing back, I noticed that it was using the following config file:
(==) Using config file: "/etc/X11/XF86Config-4
I made the changes to my XF86Config-4 file based on this thread:
http://www.mail-archive.com/fonts@xfree86.org/msg01588.html
And now I can successfully run xstartup once again! :)
-----
2. My mySQL server wasn't starting up successfully. It was erroring out with this error in the log file (/usr/local/mysql/var/host.log):
Can't start server : Bind on unix socket: Permission denied
Do you already have another mysqld server running on socket: /t
mp/mysql.sock ?
How odd, I am root, and I have no problems writing to /tmp. Turns out that although I was running "mysql.server start" as root, the actual mysqld process was running as the "mysql" user. For some reason, /tmp had been reprotected to 700 permissions. I ran "chmod 777 /tmp" and now mysql starts up fine.
-----
Addendum:
Duh... The /tmp permissions problem is probably why my xserver didn't start up properly in (1) in the first place!!!

Work kinda sucks I think
So they opened 26 new reqs at the Lexington site. That's right. Twenty six. There's gonna be 26 new suckers working in Lexington, MA in a couple of months.
Just jolly great...
Here, we've lost Dat, Patrick, Rick, Bruce, Jane, Robards and Florence. And we haven't had a single replacement req to replace any one of the seven people we've lost in the last year or two. And Lexington is getting TWENTY SIX freakin' reqs.
What's up with that?!
You know, you put together all these "coincidences" and right now, it seems very much that the writing is on the wall. This support site isn't gonna to last much longer. Maybe a year, maybe 6 months.
Oh, I'm sure they won't close us down right now. It would cost too much, and we're still needed. At least until those 26 new bozos get up to speed on ClearCase.
Well, you know what? I don't think I'm going to wait around for them to invite me to leave. I'm starting to look for a new job, send out resumes, that sorta thing.
Who knows? Maybe I'll find a new job soon... :)

No more camera!
So now I'm lost my darling camera. SHIT!!!!!!!
Yes, that means no more new photos for a while. Yes, that also means I'll have to shell out another few hundred to buy a new camera. SHIT!!!!!
Nobody to blame but myself, for being stupid and careless and leaving it around. ARGH!!!!!!
Oh well... Let's be positive about this. It was time to upgrade anyway?!

House Sitting in Woodside
Joyce's friend will be away in UK for 2 wks, so Joyce and I are taking care of the house and the two doggies for 2 weeks.
The house is huge. FREAKING HUGE. Five bedrooms, five bathrooms, huge kitchen, pool, sprawling garden filled with lemon, grapefruit, apple and whatever other trees. it's on top of a hill in a rather exclusive neighbourhood. At night, it's almost pitch dark outside (no street lights) and it feels as if you're alone in the world.
Spent most of the first weekend lounging around the pool. Got a slight sunburn on my back. Also probably shouldn't have spent too much time in the pool cos I think the chlorine is irritating my skin and my allergy rashes are coming back.
Cooked dinner (prawns + scallops) for Joyce on Mon night. She cooked chicken rice for me and one of her friends on Tue night.
The house is really nice except that it's a real pain driving to work in the morning. Gotta wake up at 7.45am instead of my usual 8.45 :)
The doggies... Buddi is some 12 yrs old, and Bella is 9. He's kinda old, doesn't move around a whole lot. Bella is younger, more active, and makes a mess of the food. The dogs are pretty well behaved apart from the occasional "liquid surprise"!
